Obesity and Weight Loss – you Decide

The human body requires a variety of essential nutrients in order to maintain physical health. These nutrients are proteins, fats, minerals, vitamins, and carbohydrates. The body also needs water and fatty acids for brain and cell construction. Without these essential nutrients, the general health is threatened and weight loss is unlikely.

Effective weight loss can be achieved by simply following a normal balanced diet but with smaller servings. Low fat varieties of food make good substitutes for the more fatty foods and are available in an ever increasing variety of foods. By using this method for weight loss, long term results are more likely while maintaining good health.

The body gets rid of fat by exercising and, to do this effectively, it is important that there is enough energy to run the body properly. The body has to rely on stored energy sources like carbohydrates and fats so diets that lack fats or carbohydrates can be very harmful.

There are also psychological aspects to dieting. There are techniques that affect the desire to eat and therefore affect the appetite. These can come in the form of medical interventions or natural manners.

Appetite can be suppressed by using stimulants such as ephedrine or L-Phenylalanine both of which send messages of fullness to the brain.

Also, consuming low energy foods that are rich in fibre, such as non-starchy vegetables, can achieve the same effect. Exercise is also useful in controlling appetite.

Okay, let’s look at some of the methods available on the diet merry-go-round and see what they involve. Having such information can help you to make informed and suitable choices for your own health and wellbeing.

There are several weight loss organisations who help people with weight loss. These include groups such as Weight Watchers, LA Weight Loss or Jenny Craig and these all have proven track records. There are also a multitude of similar programs run by not-for-profit organisations like church groups and neighbourhood health clinics. Most groups employ the power of group meetings to provide emotional support and useful information.

Then there are the low fat foods. These help people feel full longer, and are useful in e any diet plan. However, high consumption of these foods that generally contain refined carbohydrates, can actually cause weight gain rather than weight loss. Often, the low fat ‘diets’ fail to recognise the importance of the essential fatty acides and remove both good and bad fats from the food intake.

Low carbohydrate diets discourage carbohydrate intake and encourage the consumption of lots of protein particularly red meat. Eating fruits and non-starchy vegetables provides fibre and nutrients. A low-carbohydrate diet is unsuitable as a long-term diet. The products of fat metabolism and protein metabolism include ketones which can be harmful.

The problem with any of these fad diets are that they are normally short term and have rigid rules which are unsustainable in the long term. Many of them are also inadequate in areas of proper nutrition and therefore dangerous leading to iron deficiency and poor bone health.

I’m sure you are well aware of the need for a balanced diet to assist in losing weight but did you know that you also need to look have a healthy mind? Proper nutrients keep you healthy, alert and active, thereby satisfying the needs of both body and mind. Regular meals and the occasional small treat also keep the diet satisfying and ensures that you are able to maintain these new eating habits. A healthy diet can also reduce your risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Above all, don’t expect miracles from your weight loss program. Be realistic about what is a sensible weight loss and develop the lifestyle changes needed to achieve that. Set realistic goals and reward yourself when you achieve each goal. Also, set your goals in small chunks. For instance, don’t say you need to lose 50 pounds, say you need to lose 10 pounds and, each time you achieve that goal, reward yourself and then set yourself another goal.

Using these measures to achieve your weight loss will ensure you reach your realistic goals and is the safe and sensible approach.

What’s a successful weight-loss diet for a vegetarian?

Posted by Angel | Posted in Weight loss diets | Posted on 27-05-2010

I would LOVE to lose some weight. Right now I weigh about 137 pounds, but I really want to lose 20 by Christmas. I don’t eat meat, but are there any good meat-less diets out there that will help me achieve this goal?

Hey im a vegetarian too! Ive been like this for like nearly a month now, i used to get really bloated after i ate meat so i gave it up and ive never felt better than i do now!

I wouldnt suggest like a diet, just keep a balance of Veges and fresh fruit. Yoghurt helps with digestion and also i only eat bread once a week since there are LOTS of carbs in them. (cause bloating for me)
I cut out yeast made things too like vegemite, marmite, bread, etc.

Drink PLENTY of water because that will help with hunger pangs coz your body is not always hungry!

Be creative with like seafood salads! Fruit salads (fruit mixed with lettuce – very delicious!)

I still eat fish and chicken actually so im happy with just that:)
I think salads are very filling personally, crackers are good too!
Mixed nuts and dried fruit are a nice snack too! :)

hope that helped! – if u want more help just ask :)

Which is more important for weight loss: diet or exercise?

When lose weight, is it better to just eat normal and exercise? Or is it better to go on a low calorie diet and exercise?

I’ve recently heard that diet isn’t neccessarily guarenteed to give you weight loss, but exercise will.

If you choose the right foods without excessive fat content you can eat most anything you want. Portion size is the key along with an exercise program.
I’m a natural competitive bodybuilder and I can tell you 70% of how we end up looking for a show is diet related, 20% of what’s done at the gym (although the hardest part physically) and maybe 5% of supplements that work for you. Loosing weight is all about how much goes in Vs. how much goes out. 3500 calories is a pound….proper eating and exercise will work.

Weight Loss Programs – Which Diet Is Best ?

Posted by Angel | Posted in Weight loss diets | Posted on 21-05-2010

We are lucky to live in an age when information is readily available to help us find a solution to almost any problem that we may be facing. Healthy weight loss is a perfect example of this. There are many weight loss programs that will suit almost any type of person and their lifestyle.

An important thing to consider when choosing the right program is to find one that educates you long term on how to lose weight and keep it off for good. Below are some of the most popular weight loss programs on the market today:

The Diabetes Diet:
The Diabetes diet is not so much a diet as an education on what foods are healthy and what foods cause the diabetic to have an increase in glucose in the blood. Each person differs in the way that their body and metabolism burns up glucose, so the diabetic diet differs among those who use it. The Diabetic diet is less like a diet and more like a healthy weight loss program that can be used by anyone who wants to benefit from a healthier lifestyle.

The South Beach Diet:
The South Beach diet is known as one of the most popular, healthy weight loss diets of our time. A cardiologist named Dr Arthur Agatston, at a hospital in South Beach, created this diet. He originally developed the diet for patients who were overweight and had heart problems. Dr Agatston has been quoted as saying that the South Beach Diet is not a low carb eating plan or a low fat eating plan, but you can be assured that it is both healthy and really works.

NutriSystem Nourish Program:
The Nutri System Nourish Program works by controlling the foods that you eat, as well as your portions. There are a few good things about this diet. The first is that the food is already prepared and shipped right to your front door – healthy weight loss without the dishes, much like Jenny Craig. The other benefit of the NutriSystem Nourish Program is that it is very affordable, even if you are not a Hollywood star.

The Zone Diet:
Barry Sears PhD created the Zone Diet and according to recent studies, it has been found to be the most successful diet from among such diets as the Atkins diet and other high carb, low fat diets. The diet itself is said to be quite tricky to understand and works on a formula of 40% carbs and 30% of both protein and fats, for every meal. If you can understand the Zone diet, you will have a great success rate from being on it.

The Atkins Diet:
The Atkins Diet has been around since the 70s when Dr. Robert Atkins wrote the book, The New Diet Revolution. This diet became very popular a few years ago, but that popularity is beginning to dwindle. The Atkins Diet works on the principal that you are allowed to eat proteins and fat, but must avoid eating carbs in your eating plan.

This particular way of eating has created a lot of controversy and the results have been mixed. It is said that the Atkins Diet is not for everyone, but research suggests that many people have achieved short-term weight loss from this diet.

Negative Calorie Diet Plan:
This program is said to be a fad diet that is a thinly disguised low calorie diet. The Negative Calorie Diet works by eating foods that take more calories to digest than what they contain. There have been mixed results with the Negative Calorie Diet Plan, but, as a rule, many people have had a short-term weight loss solution on this diet.

The Three-Day Diet:
The three-day diet claims that those using it will lose up to 10 pounds in 3 days by sticking to the meal plan for the three days. It is based on a very low calorie-eating plan. A low calorie plan can be of little use for shedding pounds if used over a longer period than three days because, after this time, your body will begin a starvation mode and slow down your metabolism. Because the diet is based on a low calorie-eating plan, you may also feel drained of energy and hungry. This may cause many people to stop using this eating plan.

There are many other weight loss programs or diets that can help you lose weight, however it is always best to check with your doctor first before changing your eating habits or taking any diet pills.
